Following Knull's defeat, Stark kept his symbiote, which he dubbed the Extrembiote, attached to the armor it had transmuted, while he returned to a regular copy of the suit. In the process, the symbiote that Iron Man subdued infused into his armor and transmuted it. To this end, Stark infected one of Knull's symbiote dragons with Extremis to cut it off from the symbiote hive.
In a desperate attempt to save his life, Iron Man set out to find a symbiote for Brock to bond with it. ĭuring an invasion on Earth by the symbiote god Knull, the host of the Venom symbiote, Eddie Brock, was fatally injured when stripped off it. He also did away with all of his Iron Man suits, resorting instead on a single vintage-style armor. He was forced to expel the Bleeding Edge armor from his system, and the Iron Man Mark 37 armor was lost forever, rendered inert in order to comply with manipulated government mandates. X-Men.Īfter Stark's relapse into alcoholism during Fear Itself kicked off a series of manipulations by the Mandarin, Ezekiel Stane and Justine Hammer, Stark was considered unfit to pilot such a dangerous and powerful suit of armor. The Bleeding Edge armor could also be modified using different materials, like when he created the Iron Destroyer armor using Uru metal during Fear Itself or when he was forced to remove the metal from his armor to take on Magneto during Avengers vs. Tony's connection to the Bleeding Edge armor allowed him to adjust his suit on the fly to create weapons, or even line the suit with liquid lenses so he can see in 360 degrees. Some of the unique capabilities of this new armor were Tony's ability to subtly use it to affect his everyday life, such as the time he used the liquid metal to coat his eyeball in order to enhance his vision, or when he used the armor to instantly protect himself during a failed test run of an R.T. As Tony Stark himself described it, the suit was composed of "neurokinetic user-controlled morphologic nanoparticle bundles" that created "a fibrous wetweb of iron and platinum" that was stored in the marrow of Tony's bones and powered by the R.T. The suit now took shape over Tony Stark like liquid metal, forming layers of armored musculature instantly over his body to form the crimson-and-gold armor, which took on a more fluid design than previous armors.

When going over the plans for Tony's new suit, Reed said that it was an upgrade to Extremis and to Stark as well, but Tony rejected that and said that "this is what comes next." to power his brain as well, which allowed him to direct some of that immense energy to his brain to increase his intelligence. This also meant that Tony Stark was able to use the R.T. node in Tony's chest also powered his entire body, including his life functions like breathing. Due to the enhanced connection from the Extremis serum, the R.T. Tony's Repulsor Tech had powered his suits - along with the electromagnet that kept his heart going - for years. Thankfully, Tony Stark has powerful friends, and he teamed up with Reed Richards of the Fantastic Four to help him create his most advanced suit of armor yet, which became the Bleeding Edge armor. This left him with a gap in his memory after he reinstalled a backup of his brain, a body designed to work with a system that no longer existed and no resources to fix any of his problems. Unfortunately, after his near-death at the hands of Norman Osborn during the Siege event, Tony was forced to purge the Extremis from his body, while also liquidating his company, destroying his armors and erasing his brain to keep his secrets away from Osborn. Extremis was created as a super-soldier serum that essentially rewrote the brain's repair center, and allowed for powerful upgrades to the body that ultimately integrated Tony Stark completely with his armor that effectively made his entire body part of Iron Man. The story of this incredibly advanced armor begins with Warren Ellis and Adi Granov's 2006 Iron Man run, which introduced the Extremis virus.
